Federico Girosi

As of October 2026, Federico Girosi is a senior economist at RAND, and earlier in his career he worked on support vector machines. In 1989 he and Tomaso Poggio published the AI memo “A Theory of Networks for Approximation and Learning.” In 1997 he co-wrote a CVPR paper on training support vector machines for face detection with Edgar Osuna and Robert Freund. He holds a physics PhD from the University of Genoa and earned a Harvard PhD in health policy in 2003. In 2015 he was an associate professor at the University of Western Sydney, and in 2023 he co-wrote a RAND paper on generating synthetic health data with artificial intelligence.
