Erik Learned-Miller
Also known as Erik G. Learned-Miller, E. G. Learned-Miller, E.G. Learned-Miller, E. Learned-Miller
Erik Learned-Miller is a computer vision researcher whose Labeled Faces in the Wild benchmark helps drive the field toward real-world face recognition. He graduated from Yale in 1988, co-founded CORITechs in 1989, and completed an MIT doctorate in 2002. After joining the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences faculty in 2004, he received the Mark Everingham Award in 2019. Honors also include UMass Amherst's Chancellor's Medal in 2021, and in September 2022 he was named chair of the faculty at the Manning College. As of October 2026, he is a professor there, listed on leave through spring 2027.

Timeline
-
1988–1989
Co-founding CORITechs
He earns a BA in psychology from Yale in 1988. In 1989 he co-founds CORITechs, where he co-develops an FDA-cleared system for image-guided neurosurgery.
-
2002–2004
An MIT doctorate, then UMass faculty
He completes an MIT doctorate in 2002 with a dissertation on learning from one example. In 2004 he joins the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences as an assistant professor.
-
2007
Labeled Faces in the Wild
From 2007 he helps generate and maintain the Labeled Faces in the Wild dataset and benchmark. Its benchmark helps drive the field toward more uncontrolled and real-world face recognition.
-
2015
Co-program chair of CVPR
In 2015 he serves as co-program chair of CVPR in Boston.
-
2019
The Mark Everingham Award
In 2019 he receives the Mark Everingham Award for contributions to the computer vision community, specifically for his development of the Labeled Faces in the Wild database.
-
2021
The Chancellor's Medal
In 2021 he is presented with the Chancellor's Medal, the highest recognition bestowed upon UMass Amherst faculty.
-
September 2022
Chair of the faculty
In September 2022 he is named chair of the faculty at the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences.
-
As of October 2026
Professor on leave
He is a professor at the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences, listed on leave through spring 2027. His current research focuses on unsupervised, self-supervised and semi-supervised learning, and on mechanisms for regulating face recognition technology.
