Edward Stabler

Edward Stabler is a computational linguist whose work includes formal grammars, parsing, and natural-language systems. He earned a Ph.D. in linguistics and philosophy at MIT in 1981 and served on UCLA's faculty from 1984 to 2016. His work includes a 1987 paper on logic grammars, a natural-language understanding patent, a paper on top-down grammar recognizers, a 2019 paper on active gap-finding in a formal parser, and a 2025 paper on modular minimalist grammar. As of October 2026, he is a professor emeritus at UCLA, with research interests in computational linguistics, psycholinguistics, and philosophy of logic and language.

Timeline

  1. 1981

    A doctorate at MIT

He earns a Ph.D. in linguistics and philosophy at MIT in 1981.

  2. 1984–2016

    Faculty at UCLA

He serves on UCLA's faculty from 1984 to 2016.

  3. 1987

    Restricting logic grammars

In 1987, he publishes “Restricting Logic Grammars with Government-Binding Theory” in Computational Linguistics.

  4. 1998

    Natural-language understanding patent

In 1998, he and Kathleen Dahlgren receive a patent for a natural-language understanding system. It uses modules for parsing, disambiguation, formal semantics, anaphora resolution, and coherence.

  5. 2011

    Top-down grammar recognizers

In 2011, he publishes “Top-Down Recognizers for MCFGs and MGs” in the proceedings of the 2nd Workshop on Cognitive Modeling and Computational Linguistics.

  6. 2019

    An active-filler parser

In 2019, with Tim Hunter and Miloš Stanojević, he publishes a formal, sound, and complete parser for Minimalist Grammars. Its search space includes branching points that represent active gap-finding decisions.

  7. 2025

    Modular minimalist grammar

In 2025, he publishes “Realizational Morphology in a Modular Minimalist Grammar” in the Proceedings of the 18th Meeting on the Mathematics of Language.
