Researcher

Dipankar Dasgupta

Dipankar Dasgupta is a computer scientist whose research applies bio-inspired computing and machine learning to cyber defense. He earned engineering degrees in India and a computer science PhD at Strathclyde, then joined the University of Memphis after a New Mexico postdoc and a visiting faculty role in Missouri. His work includes Digital Immunity, Negative Authentication and a 2004 paper on variable-sized detectors for negative selection. He received the 2014 ACM SIGEVO Impact Award, became an IEEE Fellow in 2015, received Memphis’s 2023 presidential award for lifetime research achievement, and held a 2023–24 Fulbright–NSF Distinguished Scholar appointment in Iceland. As of October 2026, he is the Hill Professor in Cybersecurity and director of Memphis’s Center for Information Assurance; he holds ACM Distinguished Speaker and IEEE Distinguished Lecturer appointments for 2026–2028.

Timeline

  1. 1981–1986

    Engineering degrees in India

He earns a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in India in 1981 and a master's degree in computer engineering in 1986.

  2. 1994–1996

    Postdoc and visiting faculty

He holds a PhD in computer science from the University of Strathclyde. From January 1994 to August 1995, he works as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of New Mexico on an immune-system model for novelty detection in sensory data; he serves as visiting faculty at the University of Missouri–St. Louis through December 1996.

  3. 1997–2004

    A Memphis professorship

In January 1997, he joins the University of Memphis's Computer Science Department and becomes a full professor in 2004. His research applies bio-inspired computing and machine learning to cyber defense, including Digital Immunity and Negative Authentication.

  4. 2004

    Variable-sized negative selection detectors

In 2004, he and Zhou Ji publish “Real-valued negative selection algorithm with variable-sized detectors.” The paper introduces a detector-generation and matching method for negative selection, using detectors with variable properties.

  5. 2014–2015

An ACM award and IEEE fellowship

He receives the 2014 ACM SIGEVO Impact Award. In 2015, he becomes an IEEE Fellow for contributions to immunological computation and bio-inspired cybersecurity.

  6. 2023

    A presidential research award

In 2023, he receives the Arthur C. Graesser Presidential Award for Lifetime Achievement in Research, the University of Memphis's highest level of research recognition for faculty.

  7. 2023–2024

    A Fulbright cybersecurity visit

The Fulbright–National Science Foundation Distinguished Scholar Award in Cybersecurity and Critical Infrastructure takes him to Iceland for the 2023–24 academic year. From February 2024 to April 2024, he works as a lecturer and researcher at Reykjavik University and plans a cybersecurity education program plus research on advanced identity and authentication.

  8. As of October 2026

    Hill Professor and CfIA director

As of October 2026, he is the Hill Professor in Cybersecurity and director of the Center for Information Assurance at the University of Memphis. In November 2025, ACM selects him as a Distinguished Speaker; in 2026, he holds ACM Distinguished Speaker and IEEE Distinguished Lecturer appointments for 2026–2028. At a cybersecurity community symposium in April 2026, he chairs a session and presents on AI for security and cyber education.
