Dino Pedreschi
Dino Pedreschi is a computer scientist at the University of Pisa whose research covers data mining, explainable AI and the social impact of artificial intelligence. After a degree in 1982 and a doctorate in 1987 at Pisa, he became a full professor there in 2000 and received a Google Research Award in 2009 for his work on privacy-preserving data mining. In 2018, he coauthored the survey A Survey of Methods for Explaining Black Box Models, and in 2025 the journal Artificial Intelligence published Human-AI coevolution, with him as first author. He coordinated Spoke 1, Human-centered AI, of Italy's FAIR project, which ran from 2023 to 2025, and in June 2026 the European Commission published the AI Act code of practice on AI-generated content, in which he served as vice-chair of Working Group 1. At Pisa, he is a professor of computer science, co-leads the Pisa KDD Lab with Fosca Giannotti, and is Chief Data Scientist at Reimagine Europa.

Timeline
-
1982–2000
Doctorate and chair at Pisa
He earns a degree in information science at the University of Pisa in 1982 and a doctorate in computer science there in 1987. He becomes a university researcher in 1988, an associate professor in 1992 and a full professor in 2000, with visiting stays at the University of Texas at Austin, CWI Amsterdam and UCLA along the way.
-
2008–2010
A Google Research Award
He co-edits the Springer book Mobility, Data Mining and Privacy in 2008 and receives a Google Research Award in 2009 for his research on privacy-preserving data mining and anonymity-preserving data publishing. From 2009 to 2010, he is a visiting scientist at the Barabási Lab (Center for Complex Network Research) of Northeastern University in Boston.
-
2017
Ordine del Cherubino at Pisa
In 2017, the Rector of the University of Pisa awards him the Ordine del Cherubino for his scientific and cultural achievements and his contribution to the life of the University. He is also director of the Data Science PhD program at Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa from 2017.
-
2018
Explaining black box models
In 2018, he coauthors A Survey of Methods for Explaining Black Box Models with Riccardo Guidotti, Anna Monreale, Salvatore Ruggieri, Franco Turini and Fosca Giannotti. The survey classifies the main problems in the literature by the notion of explanation and the type of black box system, to help researchers find the proposals closest to their own work.
-
2019–2022
Italian and European AI roles
In 2019, the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research names him to its Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence. In May 2020, the European Parliament's IMCO Committee asks him to write an in-depth study on the impact of AI on online platforms and marketplaces. By 2022, he is the Italian member of the Responsible AI working group of GPAI and scientific director of the Societal-aware AI line of the Humane-AI-Net network.
-
2023–2025
Human-centered AI at FAIR
He coordinates Spoke 1, Human-centered AI, of FAIR (Future Artificial Intelligence Research), an Italian national project funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan that runs from 2023 to 2025. In 2025, the journal Artificial Intelligence publishes Human-AI coevolution, written by him and sixteen co-authors, which proposes a new field of study on the human-AI feedback loop at the intersection of AI and complexity science.
-
2025–2026
Vice-chair of an AI Act code
By November 2025, he is vice-chair of the European expert group writing the AI Act code of practice on transparency of AI-generated content. In June 2026, the European Commission publishes the final code, with him as Vice-Chair of Working Group 1 on transparency obligations for providers of generative AI systems.
