Dimitrios Tzionas

Also known as Dimitris Tzionas, D. Tzionas

Dimitrios Tzionas is a computer vision researcher whose AI work models people, movement and interaction with objects. He studied electrical and computer engineering at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, completed a PhD on hand-object interaction at Bonn, and developed 3D hand and body models at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems. At the University of Amsterdam, he led research on 3D virtual humans and coauthored InteractVLM, which estimates 3D contact points on people and objects from images. Since June 2026, he is an assistant professor at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and leads the 3Dim Intelligence team.

Timeline

  1. 2002–2009

    Electrical engineering at Aristotle

He studies Electrical and Computer Engineering at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from 2002 to 2009 and earns an engineering diploma there.

  2. May 2012–August 2016

    A PhD at Bonn

At the University of Bonn, he completes a PhD in 2016 with a thesis on capturing hand-object interaction and reconstructing manipulated objects from RGB-D input, advised by Juergen Gall.

  3. October 2016–October 2018

    Embodied Hands at MPI-IS

At the Perceiving Systems department of MPI-IS, he works on 3D hand modeling, whole-body modeling and 4D scan registration, and hand-object reconstruction. In 2017, he coauthors Embodied Hands, a model of hands and bodies interacting together.

  4. October 2018–May 2022

    Research Scientist at MPI-IS

He co-advises PhD students and co-leads part of the Perceiving Systems department's research agenda at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems.

  5. June 2022–June 2026

    Assistant Professor at UvA

In June 2022, he joins the University of Amsterdam's Computer Vision group as a tenured assistant professor and starts a research direction on 3D virtual humans. He teaches the bachelor's Introduction to Computer Vision course for AI students.

  6. January 2025

    An ELLIS Scholar

He becomes an ELLIS Scholar in the ELLIS Unit Amsterdam in January 2025.

  7. 2025

    3D contact estimates with InteractVLM

In 2025, he coauthors InteractVLM, which estimates 3D contact points on human bodies and objects from single in-the-wild images and supports their joint reconstruction.

  8. Since June 2026

    Assistant Professor at AUTh

Since June 2026, he is an assistant professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and leads 3Dim Intelligence, a team working on 3D/4D human perception and synthesis. In 2026, he coauthors RHINO, a framework that reconstructs a person, a manipulated object and a scene from monocular video.
