Jürgen Gall
Also known as Juergen Gall
Jürgen Gall is a computer vision professor at the University of Bonn whose work spans human motion, object detection, action recognition, and behavior forecasting. He studied mathematics in Mannheim and Swansea before doctoral research on markerless motion capture, then held research posts at ETH Zurich and the Max Planck Institute. With Victor Lempitsky, he developed Class-Specific Hough Forests for object detection; he received the 2014 German Pattern Recognition Award and a 2015 ERC Starting Grant for video-based movement analysis. He became spokesperson for Bonn’s DFG research unit Anticipating Human Behavior in 2017, and as of October 2026 he is a professor and Computer Vision Group head at Bonn, a Lamarr Institute principal investigator, and a director of ELLIS Unit NRW.

Timeline
-
2000–2004
Mathematics in Mannheim and Swansea
From 2000 to 2003, he studies mathematics at the University of Mannheim. He continues at the University of Wales Swansea from 2003 to 2004 and earns a first-class BSc in mathematics.
-
2006–2013
Doctoral work and research posts
He pursues computer-science doctoral research at Saarland University and the Max Planck Institute for Informatics from 2006 to 2009; his thesis addresses filtering and optimization for markerless human motion capture. From 2009 to 2012, he works as a postdoc at ETH Zurich; he becomes a senior research scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems from 2012 to 2013.
-
2009
Class-Specific Hough Forests
With Victor Lempitsky, he develops Class-Specific Hough Forests for Object Detection. The 2009 method trains a random forest to map image patches to likely object-center locations.
-
Since 2013
Professor at Bonn
In June 2013, he becomes professor and head of the Computer Vision Group at the University of Bonn.
-
2014
A pattern recognition award
He receives the German Pattern Recognition Award for work on interacting particle systems and random forests applied to human pose estimation, object detection, and action recognition.
-
December 2015
An ERC Starting Grant
In December 2015, he receives an ERC Starting Grant to develop models that analyze movement in video recordings. The project is titled Analysis and Representation of Complex Activities in Videos.
-
Since 2017
Anticipating human behavior
Since 2017, he serves as spokesperson for Bonn’s DFG-funded Research Unit 2535, Anticipating Human Behavior. In December 2020, the unit receives a three-year funding extension for AI research that recognizes and anticipates human behavior.
-
As of October 2026
Directing ELLIS Unit NRW
He is professor and head of the Computer Vision Group at the University of Bonn, director of ELLIS Unit NRW, and a principal investigator for Embodied AI at the Lamarr Institute. He coauthors the 2026 WACV paper Scalable Video Action Anticipation with Cross Linear Attentive Memory.
