Derek Sleeman
Derek Sleeman is an AI researcher whose work spans intelligent tutoring, knowledge acquisition and clinical AI. He began at Leeds as a computing assistant and lecturer, co-founded its Computer-Based Learning Unit in 1969, and developed early medical computer-assisted instruction. He worked in AI and education at Stanford, became Aberdeen's first professor of computing science, and became a Fellow of the European AI Society in 2004. He is an Emeritus Professor at Aberdeen, and his 2023 research examines inconsistent expert annotations in clinical AI.

Timeline
-
1965–1982
Learning systems at Leeds
At Leeds, he works as a computing assistant and lecturer and serves as associate director of the Computer Based Learning Project. In 1969, he co-founds the Computer-Based Learning Unit; the work leads him to intelligent tutoring systems, and he develops early medical computer-assisted instruction.
-
1982–1986
Stanford AI and tutoring
From 1982 to 1986, he works at Stanford as an associate professor of AI and education and a senior research associate in the Heuristic Programming Project. In 1982, he co-edits Intelligent Tutoring Systems with John Seely Brown.
-
1986–1995
Aberdeen's first computing professor
He returns to Aberdeen in 1986 as the university's first professor of computing science. From 1992 to 1995, he coordinates the EC's Network of Excellence in Machine Learning and Knowledge Acquisition.
-
2000–2007
EPSRC project and EurAI Fellowship
He serves as one of the principal investigators in the EPSRC-sponsored IRC in Advanced Knowledge Technologies from 2000 to 2007. In 2004, he becomes a Fellow of the European AI Society (EurAI).
-
Since 2008
Emeritus professor and clinical AI
He is an Emeritus Professor in Aberdeen's School of Natural and Computing Sciences, a position he has held since 2008. In 2023, he co-authors a study of inconsistent expert annotations in clinical AI, with models built from independent ICU consultant labels showing low agreement in external validation.
