C J Van Rijsbergen
Also known as Keith van Rijsbergen
C J Van Rijsbergen is a computer scientist whose research developed theoretical models for information retrieval. He completed a computer-science PhD at Cambridge in 1972, taught artificial intelligence at Monash, and led computer science departments in Dublin and Glasgow. At Glasgow, he founded the Information Retrieval Group; his books explored probabilistic, logical, geometric and quantum approaches to retrieval. He received the Tony Kent Strix Award in 2004 and the Gerard Salton Award in 2006. As of October 2026, he is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at Glasgow and has retired from the university.

Timeline
-
1943–1972
Mathematics and computer science
Born in the Netherlands in 1943, he earns a mathematics degree at the University of Western Australia and completes a computer-science PhD at Cambridge in 1972.
-
1973–1979
Teaching at Monash and Cambridge
From 1973 to 1975, he lectures in information retrieval and artificial intelligence at Monash University. He holds a Royal Society Information Research Fellowship at the Cambridge Computer Laboratory and King’s College from 1975 to 1979; the 1979 second edition of Information Retrieval adds a chapter on probabilistic retrieval.
-
1980–1986
Professor at Dublin and Glasgow
He becomes professor and head of the Computer Science Department at University College Dublin in 1980. In 1986, he moves to Glasgow as professor in the Department of Computing Science and head of department.
-
1986
The Glasgow Information Retrieval Group
He founds the Glasgow Information Retrieval Group at the University of Glasgow in 1986. His research develops theoretical models for information retrieval, some of which he follows from prototype to production.
-
1993–2000
Editor of The Computer Journal
In 1993, he becomes editor-in-chief of The Computer Journal and holds the post until 2000.
-
1999
Information Retrieval: Uncertainty and Logics
In 1999, he publishes Information Retrieval: Uncertainty and Logics with Crestani and Lalmas.
-
2004–2006
The Geometry of Information Retrieval
He publishes The Geometry of Information Retrieval in 2004, presenting logical, probabilistic and vector-space models within a quantum-mechanical framework. In 2004, he receives the Tony Kent Strix Award; in 2006, he receives the Gerard Salton Award with an acceptance lecture titled “Quantum haystacks.”
-
As of October 2026
Honorary Senior Research Fellow
As of October 2026, he is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the School of Computing Science at the University of Glasgow and has retired from the university.
