David Magerman

Also known as David M. Magerman

David Magerman is a computer scientist who built statistical parsers and language models for machine translation and speech. He studied mathematics and computer science at Penn and Stanford, then built language models at IBM. At Renaissance Technologies, he led production, helped design equities-trading software, and returned as a remote researcher after moving to Philadelphia. He joined Differential Ventures in November 2018 and, as of October 2026, is a co-founder and managing partner there and founder and president of Tzemach David; he led a panel on generative AI in production in April 2026.

Timeline

  1. 1980s–1990s

    Language models at IBM

He studies mathematics and computer science at Penn and Stanford. In the 1980s and early 1990s, he builds language models for machine translation and speech at IBM's speech-recognition group.

  2. 1994

    A Stanford parsing thesis

He earns a computer-science PhD at Stanford and writes the 1994 thesis Natural Language Parsing as Statistical Pattern Recognition. The thesis proposes a statistical parser trained from parsed sentences.

  3. 1995

    The SPATTER parser

In 1995, he presents SPATTER, a statistical parser that uses decision-tree learning to construct a complete parse for every sentence.

  4. By 2018

    Renaissance research roles

At Renaissance, he heads production and plays a lead role in designing and building software for the equities trading group. He leaves in 2006, moves to Philadelphia in 2008, and returns to Renaissance as a remote researcher, writing code and finding trading signals. By November 2018, he is a former research scientist and head of production at Renaissance.

  5. November 2018

    Joining Differential Ventures

He joins Differential Ventures as managing partner in November 2018.

  6. As of October 2026

    Managing partner at Differential

He is a co-founder and managing partner at Differential Ventures. In April 2026, he leads a panel about generative AI in production. He is also the founder and president of Tzemach David.
