Researcher

John Hopfield

Also known as John J. Hopfield

John Hopfield is a physicist whose 1982 neural network modeled associative memory and contributed to machine learning with artificial neural networks. He studied at Swarthmore and Cornell, held faculty posts at Berkeley and Princeton, and moved to Caltech in 1980. He returned to Princeton in 1996 and served as president of the American Physical Society in 2006. His honors include a 1983 MacArthur Fellowship, a 2009 IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Award, the 2022 Boltzmann Medal, a 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics shared with Geoffrey Hinton, and the 2025 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering. As of October 2026, he is a Caltech professor emeritus in chemistry and biology.

Timeline

  1. 1954–1958

    Degrees in physics

He earns an A.B. at Swarthmore in 1954 and a Ph.D. from Cornell in 1958.

  2. By 1980

From Berkeley and Princeton to Caltech

He holds faculty posts at UC Berkeley and Princeton before moving to Caltech in 1980.

  3. 1982–1986

A network and a new program

In 1982, he invents a neural network that stores patterns and reconstructs a full memory from a partial cue. He studies how brain circuits compute. The MacArthur Foundation names him a Fellow in 1983, and he co-founds Caltech's Department of Computation and Neural Systems in 1986.

  4. 1996–2006

    Returning to Princeton

He returns to Princeton after his Caltech professorship ends in 1996. He serves as president of the American Physical Society in 2006.

  5. 2009–2022

    Awards for neural research

He receives the IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Award in 2009 for contributions to understanding information processing in biological systems. He receives the 2022 Boltzmann Medal.

  6. 2024

    A Nobel Prize in Physics

He shares the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics with Geoffrey Hinton for discoveries that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.

  7. 2025

    A Queen Elizabeth Prize

He is one of seven recipients of the 2025 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering. In 2025, he is an emeritus professor at Princeton.

  8. As of October 2026

    Emeritus at Caltech

He is Caltech's Roscoe G. Dickinson Professor of Chemistry and Biology, Emeritus.
