John D. Lafferty

Also known as J. D. Lafferty, J. Lafferty, J.D. Lafferty, John Lafferty

John Lafferty is a machine learning researcher whose work includes conditional random fields for sequence labeling and dynamic topic models. He earned a mathematics PhD at Princeton in 1986 and joined Carnegie Mellon’s faculty in 1994 after research at IBM; at CMU, he played a role in founding and directing the Machine Learning PhD program. IEEE elected him a Fellow in 2007 for contributions to statistical pattern recognition and statistical language processing. ICML recognized his conditional random fields and dynamic topic models papers with Test of Time Awards in 2011 and 2016. As of October 2026, he is Yale’s Malone Professor of Statistics and Data Science and an associate director of the Wu Tsai Institute; he directs its Center for Neurocomputation and Machine Intelligence.

Timeline

  1. 1986

    A mathematics doctorate

He earns a mathematics PhD at Princeton in 1986.

  2. 1994

    Professor at Carnegie Mellon

After research at IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center, he joins Carnegie Mellon’s faculty in 1994. He holds faculty roles in computer science, statistics, and machine learning and plays a role in founding and directing CMU’s Machine Learning PhD program.

    Conditional random fields

With Andrew McCallum and Fernando Pereira, he publishes Conditional Random Fields: Probabilistic Models for Segmenting and Labeling Sequence Data at ICML in 2001.

  4. 2006

    Dynamic topic models

He and David Blei publish Dynamic Topic Models at ICML in 2006; the paper develops probabilistic time-series models to analyze how topics evolve across document collections.

  5. 2007

    An IEEE fellowship

IEEE elects him a Fellow in 2007 for contributions to statistical pattern recognition and statistical language processing.

  6. 2011

An ICML Test of Time Award

ICML gives its 2011 Test of Time Award to Conditional Random Fields, coauthored with Andrew McCallum and Fernando Pereira.

  7. 2016

    ICML honors dynamic topic models

In 2016, Dynamic Topic Models, coauthored with David Blei, receives ICML’s Test of Time Award.

  8. As of October 2026

    Yale’s neurocomputation center

Yale appoints him John C. Malone Professor of Statistics and Data Science in July 2017, with a secondary appointment in computer science. He is an associate director of the Wu Tsai Institute and directs its Center for Neurocomputation and Machine Intelligence. In March 2026, he hosts a symposium as director of the center.
