Andrew V. Goldberg
Also known as Andrew Vladislav Goldberg
Goldberg is an algorithms researcher whose graph methods serve routing and navigation systems. He completed an MIT doctorate in 1987 and then became an assistant professor at Stanford. With Robert Tarjan, he developed the push-relabel method for maximum flow, published in 1988. His work at Microsoft Research and Amazon reached driving directions and large road networks. He is an endowed chair professor in industrial and systems engineering at Lehigh University, a post he took up in 2025 to advance optimization algorithms for navigation systems.

Timeline
-
1987–1988
A doctorate at MIT
In 1987 he completes a PhD in computer science at MIT, and his thesis is honored with the 1988 A.W. Tucker Prize.
-
1987–1995
Assistant professor at Stanford
At Stanford he works as an assistant professor of computer science from 1987 to 1995, with a courtesy appointment in operations research.
-
1988
The push-relabel maximum-flow method
With Robert Tarjan, he develops the push-relabel method for maximum flow, which appears in the Journal of the ACM in October 1988.
-
1995–2001
Research at NEC and InterTrust
Research positions follow at NEC Research Institute from 1995 to 1998 and at InterTrust Technologies' STAR Laboratory from 1998 to 2001.
-
2002–2014
Shortest paths at Microsoft Research
From 2002 to 2014 he works at Microsoft Research. A joint study with Chris Harrelson takes up shortest paths, a problem with many applications, including computing driving directions.
-
2009–2013
The Farkas Prize and fellowships
The INFORMS Optimization Society selects him as the 2011 Farkas Prize winner. He also becomes a Fellow of ACM in 2009 and of SIAM in 2013.
-
2014–2025
Algorithms at Amazon
Amazon hires him in 2014, and his work at Microsoft and Amazon includes algorithms for large road networks and vehicle routing.
-
Since 2025
An endowed chair at Lehigh
Lehigh's industrial and systems engineering department welcomes him in July 2025 as an endowed chair professor, to advance optimization algorithms for navigation systems.
