Carlotta Berry

Also known as Carlotta Ardell

Carlotta Berry works in robotics education and human-robot interaction and co-edited a 2024 book on machine-learning bias; as of October 2026, she is a professor of electrical and computer engineering and robotics at Rose-Hulman. She earned mathematics and electrical-engineering degrees at Spelman and Georgia Tech in 1992 and 1993, an MS from Wayne State in 1996, and a Vanderbilt PhD in 2003. At Tennessee State, she served as an assistant professor and an IEEE section secretary before moving to Rose-Hulman in 2006, where she taught robotics and human-robot interaction. In April 2012, she published a mobile-robotics book; in 2020, she helped start Black In Engineering and Black In Robotics, and IEEE's Robotics and Automation Society gave her its Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2023. Under the name Carlotta Ardell, she writes Black STEM romance, and in July 2025 she wrote about using an AI avatar to narrate robotics STEM content.
