Carlos José Pereira de Lucena

Also known as Carlos J P De Lucena, Carlos J. P. de Lucena, Carlos Lucena

Carlos José Pereira de Lucena helped found PUC-Rio’s Informatics department and built a research career in software engineering and multiagent systems. At PUC-Rio, he studied economics and mathematics before graduate work at Waterloo and UCLA and postdoctoral research at IBM. His work includes an MDA-based method that uses MAS-ML to design multiagent systems. He received the ACM Distinguished Scientist Award in 2009, became an ACM Fellow in 2013, and was elected to Brazil’s National Academy of Engineering in 2016. As of October 2026, he is professor emeritus and director of PUC-Rio’s Software Engineering Laboratory, and an adjunct professor at Waterloo.
