Bruce Wilcox

Bruce Wilcox is a game AI and chatbot programmer who builds the open-source ChatScript language. His early work includes writing Michigan's MTS/LISP interpreter and building AI for 3DO games before he serves as a core engineer at Telltale. Suzette, Rosette, and Rose win Loebner contests in 2010, 2011, 2014, and 2015; he also joins Outfit7 and co-founds Brillig Understanding. He directs natural-language strategy at Kore.ai and JustAnswer, serves as SapientX's principal scientist through 2025, and is an agentic AI consultant at Kore.ai.

  1. 1970s

    MTS/LISP at Michigan

    A Michigan graduate, he writes the MTS/LISP interpreter used at the University of Michigan and other institutions in the early 1970s.

  2. 1995–2012

    3DO AI and Telltale games

    At 3DO, he serves as its AI Guru from 1995 to 2003 and works on Army Men, Army Men: Green Rogue, Godai Elemental Force, and Jacked. From 2010 to 2012, he works as a core engineer at Telltale Games.

  3. 2008–2010

    CHAT-L and ChatScript

    At Avatar Reality, he works on the chatbot CHAT-L and consults on AI from 2008 to 2009. He designs ChatScript as an open-source language for conversational bots, and Suzette wins the 2010 Loebner Competition.

  4. 2011

    Rosette wins a Loebner Prize

    His chatbot Rosette wins the 2011 Loebner Prize.

  5. 2012

    Joining Outfit7 and Brillig

    In 2012, he joins Outfit7 as a chatbot developer and co-founds Brillig Understanding with Sue Wilcox.

  6. 2014–2015

    Two Loebner wins for Rose

    His chatbot Rose wins the Loebner Prize in 2014 and again in 2015.

  7. 2015–2025

    Strategy roles and SapientX

    He directs natural-language strategy at Kore.ai from December 2015 to January 2017 and is senior director at JustAnswer from January 2017 to July 2022. From July 2016 to December 2025, he serves as principal scientist at SapientX, which he co-founds in 2016 with David Colleen and Maclen Marvit.
