Branimir Boguraev

Also known as Bran Boguraev, Branimir K. Boguraev

Branimir Boguraev is a computational linguist whose research spans lexicon building, document analysis, and question answering. He earned degrees in computer science and applied mathematics in Sofia, completed a Cambridge doctorate in 1979, and joined IBM Research in 1988. In 1989, he coauthored a parser for machine-readable dictionaries; by 1998, he was managing natural-language research at Apple's Advanced Technology Group. In 1998, he and Rachel Bellamy described dynamic document viewers that used linguistic analysis to highlight document topics. He worked with IBM's Watson researchers on DeepQA in 2010 and shared the 2013 AAAI Feigenbaum Prize as a Watson team member; as of October 2026, he is a founding editor of Cambridge's Natural Language Processing journal and is affiliated with IBM.

Timeline

  1. 1979

    A Cambridge doctorate

At Cambridge's Computer Laboratory, he submits a 1979 PhD dissertation on automatic resolution of linguistic ambiguities; he earns computer-science and applied-mathematics degrees in Sofia.

  2. 1988–1989

    IBM's dictionary parser

He joins IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center in 1988 to work on computational lexicons; in 1989, he and Mary S. Neff publish a dictionary-entry parser that converts machine-readable dictionaries into structured lexical databases.

  3. By 1998

    Leading NLP at Apple

By 1998, he manages natural-language research at Apple's Advanced Technology Group after earlier work at IBM Research.

  4. 1998

    Dynamic document viewers

With Rachel Bellamy, he describes dynamic document viewers that use linguistic meaning analysis and content abstraction to highlight document topics.

  5. 2010

    IBM Watson and DeepQA

He works with IBM's Watson researchers on DeepQA, a system for answering natural-language questions through a combination of AI techniques.

  6. 2013

    An AAAI Feigenbaum Prize

He shares the AAAI Feigenbaum Prize as part of IBM's Watson team for combining symbolic knowledge representation, natural-language understanding, and statistical learning to answer factual questions in real time.

  7. 2015

    Lexical coverage and negation

He coauthors “The Bare Necessities: Increasing Lexical Coverage for Multi-Word Domain Terms with Less Lexical Data”; his papers also appear under the short form Bran Boguraev.

  8. As of October 2026

    Founding editor at Cambridge

He is a founding editor of Cambridge's Natural Language Processing journal and is affiliated with IBM in the United States.
