Philip Nicholas Johnson-Laird

Also known as Philip Johnson-Laird, Philip N. Johnson-Laird, Phil Johnson-Laird

Philip Johnson-Laird is a cognitive psychologist whose mental-model theory explains how people reason. He studied psychology at University College London after working as a jazz pianist, then held posts in Sussex, Cambridge and Princeton. With George Miller, he published Language and Perception in 1976; his 1983 book Mental Models presented a theory of comprehension and inference. His research produced computational models of music and papers on the Turing Test and human reasoning; he coauthored Deduction and became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1991, then was elected to the US National Academy of Sciences in 2007. As of October 2026, he is Emeritus Stuart Professor of Psychology at Princeton University.
