Researcher

Bob Coecke

Bob Coecke is a physicist whose research links quantum theory, category theory and language. After trying civil engineering and architecture, he studied mathematics and physics and earned a PhD at Vrije Universiteit Brussel in 1996. At Oxford, he built the Quantum Group and served as Professor of Quantum Foundations, Logics and Structures. His work includes a category-theoretic account of quantum protocols, a mathematical model for sentence meaning, and lambeq, a quantum natural language processing toolkit; his 2004 paper with Samson Abramsky received the 2024 LICS Test-of-Time Award. As of October 2026, he is CEO of Relational Intelligence and a Distinguished Visiting Research Chair at Perimeter Institute.

Timeline

  1. 1996

    From engineering to physics

He is a physicist who studies mathematics and physics after trying civil engineering and architecture, then earns a PhD at Vrije Universiteit Brussel in 1996.

  2. 2001–2021

    Building Oxford's Quantum Group

His academic path takes him through Imperial College London, McGill University, Cambridge University and Oxford. At Oxford, he joins as a postdoc in 2001, becomes Lecturer of Quantum Computer Science in 2007, and serves as Professor of Quantum Foundations, Logics and Structures from 2011 to 2021 while leading the Quantum Group.

  3. 2004

    Quantum protocols in categories

In 2004, he and Samson Abramsky publish A Categorical Semantics of Quantum Protocols, which treats quantum information protocols such as teleportation and entanglement swapping.

  4. 2010

    Modeling sentence meaning

In 2010, he, Mehrnoosh Sadrzadeh and Stephen Clark propose a mathematical framework that combines vector-space meaning with grammatical structure to derive sentence meaning from word meanings.

  5. 2021

    Launching a quantum NLP toolkit

Cambridge Quantum's Oxford research team, led by Chief Scientist Bob Coecke, releases lambeq, a toolkit that converts sentences into quantum circuits for quantum natural language processing.

  6. 2024

    A Test-of-Time Award

His 2004 paper with Samson Abramsky, A Categorical Semantics of Quantum Protocols, receives the LICS Test-of-Time Award in 2024.

  7. As of October 2026

    Leading Relational Intelligence

He is Founder and CEO of Relational Intelligence, and a Distinguished Visiting Research Chair at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics.
