Bo Yin

Also known as 尹博

Bo Yin is a mechanical engineer and AI-control researcher whose work applies genetic programming to combustion oscillations and machine-learning control to neuromodulation. He completed a bachelor's degree in thermal energy and power engineering at North China Electric Power University in 2014, studied mechanical engineering at HKUST, and earned a PhD in 2023. His postdoctoral appointments spanned HKUST, NTNU, and Oxford's Tan Group, where he extended control engineering to deep brain stimulation. As of October 2026, he is an assistant professor, PhD supervisor, and special research fellow at Tsinghua SIGS.

Timeline

  1. 2010–2014

    Thermal energy engineering degree

At North China Electric Power University, he earns a bachelor's degree in thermal energy and power engineering in June 2014.

  2. 2018–2023

    Graduate study at HKUST

At the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), he undertakes master's and doctoral study in mechanical engineering from September 2018 to July 2023.

  3. 2023

    A genetic programming doctorate

He earns a PhD in mechanical engineering from HKUST in 2023. His thesis tests genetic-programming control on periodic, quasiperiodic, and chaotic thermoacoustic oscillations in a flame-driven Rijke tube and an electrically heated Sondhauss tube; it reports amplitude reductions above 90% with closed-loop control.

  4. August 2023–August 2026

    Postdoctoral work across institutions

At HKUST, he works as a postdoctoral researcher from August 2023 to August 2026. He spends September 2023 to March 2024 as a visiting postdoctoral researcher at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and March 2025 to February 2026 as a visiting postdoctoral fellow in Oxford's Tan Group, where he extends his control-engineering research to neuromodulation through deep brain stimulation.

  5. 2025–2026

    Genetic programming control studies

In October 2025, he coauthors a study that uses genetic programming to suppress self-excited thermoacoustic oscillations in a Sondhauss tube. His 2026 paper applies genetic programming control to a turbulent hydrogen–methane combustor, reports thermoacoustic amplitude reductions of 80%–94%, and appears online in December 2025 and in the March 2026 journal issue.

  6. Since August 2026

    Assistant professor at Tsinghua SIGS

In August 2026, he joins Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School as an assistant professor, PhD supervisor, and special research fellow. His research applies AI-driven control and optimization to engineering systems and brain–computer interfaces, including closed-loop deep brain stimulation.
