Bishnu S. Atal
Also known as Bishnu Saroop Atal
Bishnu Atal was a speech-processing researcher in speech analysis, synthesis, recognition, and coding. Born in Kanpur, India, he earned degrees in India and the United States, taught acoustics at the Indian Institute of Science, and joined Bell Laboratories in 1961. He developed multipulse linear predictive coding and CELP for efficient speech transmission over telephone networks. At AT&T, he led the Shannon Laboratory, received the 2003 Benjamin Franklin Medal and the 2013 IEEE Kilby Signal Processing Medal, and served as an Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington. He died in 2026.
