L. R. Rabiner
Also known as Lawrence R. Rabiner, Larry Rabiner
Lawrence Rabiner is an electrical engineer whose speech recognition research helped create hidden Markov modeling, a statistical method for representing speech. He completed his doctorate in electrical engineering at MIT in June 1967 and joined Bell Laboratories as a permanent member of the research staff. In 1989 a tutorial on hidden Markov models appeared in Proceedings of the IEEE, and in 1993 he co-wrote Fundamentals of Speech Recognition. He received the Kilby Signal Processing Medal in 1999. As of October 2026, he is professor emeritus of electrical and computer engineering at UC Santa Barbara.
