Baoliang Lu

Also known as Bao-Liang Lu

Baoliang Lu is a computer scientist whose work connects machine learning with language processing and brain-computer interfaces. He earned degrees in China and Japan, worked at RIKEN, and joined Shanghai Jiao Tong University as a professor in 2002. His work includes Chinese word segmentation, multimodal deep-learning methods for emotion recognition, and EEG datasets used in later studies. He received the 2022 Asia Pacific Neural Network Society Outstanding Achievement Award and coauthored NeuroLM, a foundation model for language and EEG. As of October 2026, he is a tenured professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Institute of Artificial General Intelligence.

Timeline

  1. 1982–1994

    Engineering degrees and early work

He earns a B.S. in instrument and control engineering at Qingdao University of Science and Technology in 1982 and works there from 1982 to 1986. He earns an M.S. in computer science and engineering at Northwestern Polytechnical University in 1989, then a Dr. Eng. in electrical engineering at Kyoto University in 1994.

  2. 1994–2002

    Research at RIKEN

From 1994 to 1999, he serves as a frontier researcher at RIKEN's Bio-Mimetic Control Research Center in Nagoya. From 1999 to 2002, he works as a research scientist at the RIKEN Brain Science Institute in Wako.

  3. Since 2002

    Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong

Since August 2002, he is a full professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University's School of Computer Science.

  4. 2010

    Chinese word segmentation

In 2010, he coauthors “A Unified Character-Based Tagging Framework for Chinese Word Segmentation” with Hai Zhao, Changning Huang and Mu Li.

  5. 2016

    A multimodal emotion model

In 2016, he coauthors “Multimodal Emotion Recognition Using Multimodal Deep Learning,” which builds affective models from physiological signals. Its Bimodal Deep AutoEncoder achieves mean accuracies of 91.01% on SEED and 83.25% on DEAP.

  6. 2021

    SEED for emotion recognition

In 2021, a cross-subject and cross-session EEG emotion-recognition study evaluates the SEED and SEED-IV datasets, which the BCMI laboratory led by Lu establishes.

  7. 2022

    An APNNS achievement award

In 2022, he receives the Asia Pacific Neural Network Society's Outstanding Achievement Award.

  8. As of October 2026

    Tenured professor at SJTU

In 2025, he coauthors NeuroLM, a multi-task foundation model that treats EEG signals as a foreign language and supports multi-task learning. As of October 2026, he is a tenured professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Institute of Artificial General Intelligence.
