Researcher

Michio Sugeno

Also known as 菅野道夫

Michio Sugeno was a researcher at Tokyo Institute of Technology who introduced the Sugeno integral and whose fuzzy work reached automatic control. He and Tomohiro Takagi proposed the Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model in 1985, replacing rule consequents with mathematical functions. He presided over the Japan Society for Fuzzy Theory and Systems from 1991 to 1993 and the International Fuzzy Systems Association from 1997 to 1999. In 2000 he received the first IEEE CIS Pioneer Award in Fuzzy Systems with Zadeh, and he also received the 2010 IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Award. He died in August 2023 at age 83, as Professor Emeritus at Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Timeline

  1. 1962–2000

    Research associate to professor

He earns a B.Sc. in physics at the University of Tokyo in 1962. From 1965 to 2000 he works at Tokyo Institute of Technology, moving from research associate to associate professor and then to professor. There he introduces the Sugeno integral, a type of integral with respect to a fuzzy measure.

  2. 1985

    The Takagi-Sugeno model

He and Tomohiro Takagi propose the Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model in 1985, replacing rule consequents with mathematical functions. Among his early breakthroughs is the automatic control of a small car using fuzzy systems based on that model.

  3. 1991–1999

    Presidencies of fuzzy societies

He presides over the Japan Society for Fuzzy Theory and Systems from 1991 to 1993 and the International Fuzzy Systems Association from 1997 to 1999.

  4. 2000

    The IEEE CIS Pioneer Award

In 2000 he receives the first IEEE CIS Pioneer Award in Fuzzy Systems with Zadeh.

  5. 2000–2005

    A laboratory at RIKEN

After retiring from Tokyo Institute of Technology, he leads a laboratory at RIKEN's Brain Science Institute from 2000 to 2005.

  6. 2010

    The IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Award

He receives the 2010 IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Award.

  7. August 2023

    Death at age 83

He dies in August 2023 at age 83, after a short battle with a brain tumor, as Professor Emeritus at Tokyo Institute of Technology.
