Researcher

Augusto Smerzi

Augusto Smerzi is a physicist whose work connects machine learning with quantum sensing and precision measurement. He earned a physics doctorate at the University of Catania in 1994 and coauthored work on entanglement and quantum metrology. A 2020 method he coauthored used neural networks for Bayesian estimation in quantum sensors, and in 2024 he co-led research that measured a supersolid's superfluid fraction through Josephson oscillations. He was a research director at CNR-INO in 2022, and as of October 2026 he is a Chair Professor at Shenzhen Technology University and a CNR-INO research director at LENS.

Timeline

  1. 1994

    A physics doctorate at Catania

He earns a physics doctorate from the University of Catania in 1994.

  2. 2012

    Fisher information and entanglement

In 2012, he coauthors a study that sets Fisher-information bounds for several classes of multiparticle entanglement and links genuine multiparticle entanglement to the highest sensitivities in quantum interferometry.

  3. 2018

    A review of quantum metrology

In 2018, he coauthors a review of theory and experiments on entangled atomic ensembles and quantum-enhanced precision measurement.

  4. 2020

    Neural networks for quantum sensors

In 2020, he coauthors a method that frames parameter estimation as a classification task and uses artificial neural networks for Bayesian estimation in quantum sensors.

  5. 2022

    Research director at CNR-INO

In 2022, he is a research director at CNR's Institute of Optics in Florence, with expertise in quantum interferometry.

  6. 2024

    Measuring a supersolid

In 2024, he and Giovanni Modugno coordinate research that measures a supersolid's superfluid fraction through Josephson oscillations.

  7. 2025

    Squeezing under phase noise

In 2025, he coauthors research on differential phase measurements with two spin-squeezed atom interferometers under common-mode noise spanning the full 2π range. The study reports sensitivities below the standard quantum limit.

  8. As of October 2026

Chair Professor at Shenzhen Technology University

As of October 2026, he is a Chair Professor in Shenzhen Technology University's College of Engineering Physics and a CNR research director at the LENS section in Sesto Fiorentino.
