Ashish Tendulkar

Also known as Ashish Vijay Tendulkar, Ashish V. Tendulkar

Ashish Tendulkar is a machine-learning researcher whose work connects computational biology, biomedical text mining and applied AI. He earned an M.Tech. and PhD at IIT Bombay, received an Infosys Research Fellowship, and won the Research Scholar Forum's Best Research Scholar Award in 2007. After teaching machine learning at IIT Madras and working as a research fellow at TIFR, he held analytics and AI roles at Reliance Industries and Media.net before joining Google Research in August 2016. He coauthored MyMiner, a 2012 text-annotation tool for biocuration, a 2017 protein-sequence segmentation paper and a 2021 agent-based study of COVID-19 traveler cohorting on Mumbai's suburban railway. In March 2025, he was an AI/ML Leader at Google; as of October 2026, he is an Engineering Leader there.

  1. 1999–2009

    Persistent Systems and IIT Bombay

    He joins Persistent Systems in Pune as a member of technical staff in November 1999, then earns a Master of Technology degree at IIT Bombay's Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology in 2003 and receives an Infosys Research Fellowship for his PhD thesis in 2003. He founds Gategenie in January 2004, receives IIT Bombay's Research Scholar Forum Best Research Scholar Award in 2007, and completes a computer science PhD at IIT Bombay in 2009. From March 2008 to May 2009, he is a technical leader at Persistent Systems; from May 2009 to August 2009, he is a postdoctoral associate in the Structural Biology and Bioinformatics group at the Spanish National Cancer Research Center in Madrid.

  2. September 2009–August 2012

    Teaching at IIT Madras

    He joins IIT Madras as a visiting assistant professor in September 2009. He teaches Introduction to Machine Learning and Algorithms for Computational Biology in 2010 and 2011, then becomes a research fellow at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in October 2011.

  3. August 2012–July 2016

    Reliance and Media.net leadership

    He becomes vice president of Big Data and Analytics at Reliance Industries in August 2012 and serves through July 2014. From August 2014 through July 2016, he is a principal scientist for machine learning and AI at Media.net.

  4. 2012

    MyMiner for biocuration

    In 2012, he coauthors MyMiner, a free text-annotation tool that supports biocuration and provides labelled data for text-mining systems.

  5. 2017

    Protein word detection

    He coauthors a 2017 paper that uses unsupervised text segmentation to identify biological words in protein sequences.

  6. August 2016–2021

    Google Research and COVID modeling

    He joins Google Research in August 2016. In 2021, he coauthors an agent-based study that uses traveler cohorting on Mumbai's suburban railway to assess COVID-19 transmission strategies.

    AI/ML Leader at Google

    He takes part in IIT Palakkad's Florence Nightingale Data Science Talk Series in March 2025 as an AI/ML Leader at Google.
