Karthik K Srinivasan

Karthik K Srinivasan is a transportation engineer whose work on travel behaviour, intelligent transportation systems and network optimization draws on data analysis and simulation. A civil engineering graduate of IIT Madras in 1992, he earned an M.S. at UC Davis in 1995 and a PhD at the University of Texas at Austin in 2000; his dissertation on commuter behavior under real-time information took first place in the 2000 Eric Pas Dissertation Prize. After teaching at Vanderbilt University from 2000 to 2003, he joined IIT Madras's Department of Civil Engineering in 2003 and became a professor in 2014. From 2019 to 2021 he worked on a Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology project on data-driven transit reliability, and in 2024 he coauthored a study of leader-follower pairs in Chennai's non-lane-based traffic. He is a professor of civil engineering at IIT Madras and Affiliate Faculty at the Wadhwani School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

    Leader-follower study of Chennai traffic

    He coauthors a paper submitted to arXiv in May 2024 with Bhargava Rama Chilukuri, Martin Treiber, Ostap Okhrin and others. The study identifies leader-follower pairs and estimates vehicle-following parameters from high-resolution trajectory data collected in Chennai, and it outperforms heuristic-based identification methods from the literature.
