Bidyut Baran Chaudhuri

Bidyut Baran Chaudhuri is a computer scientist whose pattern recognition work, especially optical character recognition for Indian-language scripts, earned him IAPR and IEEE Fellow status. He earned degrees at Calcutta University and a PhD at IIT Kanpur in 1980. He joined the Indian Statistical Institute in 1978 and became the founding head of its Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Unit, which was established in 1994. The International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a Fellow in 1998 for work on character recognition and speech synthesis in Indian languages. As of October 2026, he is an emeritus professor at Techno India University in West Bengal.

  1. 1969–1980

    Degrees from Calcutta and IIT Kanpur

    He earns BSc (Hons), BTech and MTech degrees from the University of Calcutta in 1969, 1972 and 1974, then a PhD from IIT Kanpur in 1980.

  2. 1978–1982

    Joining the Indian Statistical Institute

    In 1978 he joins the Indian Statistical Institute as a faculty member, and in 1981–1982 he does postdoctoral work at Queen's University, UK.

  3. 1994

    Founding head of the vision unit

    At ISI, the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Unit is established in 1994, and he becomes its founding head.

  4. 1998

    IAPR Fellow for character recognition

    The International Association for Pattern Recognition names him a Fellow in 1998 for contributions to character recognition and speech synthesis in Indian language.

  5. 2001–2016

    IEEE Fellow, then Life Fellow

    IEEE elects him a Fellow in 2001 and a Life Fellow in 2016, citing pattern recognition, especially Indian-language script OCR, document processing and natural language processing.

  6. 2010–2011

    Bose, TWAS and Bhasin honours

    He becomes a distinguished J.C. Bose Fellow in 2010, and in 2011 he is elected a TWAS Fellow and receives the Om Prakash Bhasin Award.

  7. As of October 2026

    Emeritus professor at Techno India

    He is a computer scientist and an emeritus professor at Techno India University in West Bengal.
