Anthony Blaom

Also known as @ablaom

Anthony Blaom is a mathematician and machine-learning researcher who co-created MLJ, an open-source toolbox written in Julia. He trained as a mechanical engineer at the University of Melbourne, earned an MSc in Aeronautics and a PhD in Mathematics at Caltech, and joined the University of Auckland as a lecturer. His research moves between Hamiltonian perturbation theory, machine-learning toolbox design and neural ODE models for tumor growth. As of October 2026, he is a senior research fellow in computer science at Auckland and MLJ's co-creator and lead developer.

Timeline

  1. 1991–1998

    Engineering and a Caltech PhD

He trains as a mechanical engineer and tops his class at the University of Melbourne in 1991. At Caltech, he earns an MSc in Aeronautics and a PhD in Mathematics by 1998, then joins the University of Auckland as a Lecturer.

  2. 2001

    Hamiltonian perturbation theory

His research spans pure and applied mathematics. In 2001, he publishes A geometric setting for Hamiltonian perturbation theory in the Memoirs of the American Mathematical Society.

  3. 2018–2019

Building MLJ at the Turing Institute

In December 2018, development begins in earnest at the Alan Turing Institute. MLJ launches there in 2019 as an open-source machine-learning toolbox written in Julia, with him as a co-creator and lead contributor.

  4. 2020

    Composable machine learning

In 2020, he coauthors MLJ: A Julia package for composable machine learning with five collaborators and publishes the paper in the Journal of Open Source Software.

  5. 2021

    Designing AI toolboxes

In 2021, he coauthors Designing Machine Learning Toolboxes: Concepts, Principles and Patterns, a paper that examines patterns for AI and machine-learning tool design.

  6. 2025

    Tumor-growth ODE models

In 2025, he and Samuel Okon coauthor the preprint New tools for comparing classical and neural ODE models for tumor growth.

  7. October 2025–May 2026

    AI drug-development course

He serves as an instructor for an eight-month certificate course on AI in drug development from October 2025 to May 2026.

  8. As of October 2026

    Senior research fellow at Auckland

He is a senior research fellow in computer science at the University of Auckland and a co-creator and lead developer of MLJ.
