Anthony Aguirre

Anthony Aguirre is a theoretical cosmologist and the president and CEO of the Future of Life Institute, a nonprofit with a focus on existential risk from artificial general intelligence. He completed a Ph.D. in astronomy at Harvard in 2000, then spent three years at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton before accepting a professorship at UC Santa Cruz. In 2014 he helped found the Future of Life Institute, and in 2015 he helped launch the Metaculus prediction platform. His popular science book Cosmological Koans appeared in 2019. In 2025 he published two essays on advanced AI, Keep the Future Human in March and Control Inversion in November.

  1. 1995–1998

    Degrees from Brown and Harvard

    He receives a B.S. in mathematics and physics from Brown University in 1995. He then earns an M.S. in astronomy from Harvard University in 1998.

  2. 2000s

    A professorship at UC Santa Cruz

    He completes a Ph.D. in astronomy at Harvard University in 2000 and spends three years at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He then accepts a professorship in the physics department at UC Santa Cruz, and his research spans theoretical cosmology.

  3. March 2014

    Co-founding the Future of Life Institute

    In March 2014 he helps found the Future of Life Institute with Max Tegmark, Jaan Tallinn, Viktoriya Krakovna and Meia Chita-Tegmark.

  4. 2015

    Launching the Metaculus platform

    In 2015 he helps launch the Metaculus prediction platform with Max Wainwright and Greg Laughlin.

  5. 2019

    The Cosmological Koans book

    He publishes the popular science book Cosmological Koans in 2019, a work that uses short stories in the style of Zen to explore cosmology.

  6. March 2025

    Keep the Future Human essay

    In March 2025 he publishes Keep the Future Human, an essay making the case for closing the gates to AGI and superintelligence.

  7. November 2025

    The Control Inversion essay

    In November 2025 he publishes Control Inversion, an essay arguing that superintelligent AI systems would be fundamentally uncontrollable by humans.
