Anmol Agarwal
Anmol Agarwal is a computer science researcher whose work connects language models with software generation and formal reasoning. At IIIT Hyderabad, he studied computer science and researched information retrieval and natural language processing before joining Microsoft Research India’s AI4Code group. His papers span mental-health question generation, information-disguise methods, an open-source teaching assistant, and repository-level code generation. During a 2025 summer internship at Mistral AI, he coauthored Magistral, the company’s first reasoning model. As of October 2026, he is a master’s student in Intelligent Information Systems at Carnegie Mellon and coauthors research on formal specifications for coding agents.
Timeline
-
2019–2023
Research at IIIT Hyderabad
He studies computer science at IIIT Hyderabad from 2019 to 2023 and researches information retrieval and natural language processing at the Precog Lab.
-
2022–2023
Clinical language and information disguise
In 2022, he coauthors research on process-guided follow-up questions for depression triage. A 2023 paper proposes adversarial paraphrasing that aims to keep sensitive posts from being found through search engines.
-
2023
An open-source teaching assistant
He coauthors AI-TA, a question-answer teaching assistant built with open-source language models; the 2023 paper reports a 30% improvement in answer quality on an introductory computer science course dataset.
-
July 2023–July 2024
A research fellow in AI4Code
He joins Microsoft Research India as a research fellow in the AI4Code group in July 2023 and works on code generation and language models through July 2024.
-
2024
Repository-level code generation
In 2024, he coauthors a study that introduces RepoClassBench, a benchmark for class-level code generation in real repositories, and the RRR method for reasoning over repository context.
-
2025
A reasoning model at Mistral
He starts a summer internship at Mistral AI in May 2025 and coauthors Magistral, Mistral’s first reasoning model and a scalable reinforcement-learning pipeline.
-
2026
Formal specs for coding agents
In 2026, he coauthors Verus-SpecGym, an agentic environment that tests whether language-model agents can translate programming problems into formal specifications.
-
As of October 2026
Master’s student at Carnegie Mellon
He studies Intelligent Information Systems in the Language Technologies Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.
