Bayya Yegnanarayana

Also known as Yegnanarayana Bayya

Bayya Yegnanarayana is a speech-processing researcher and the author of the 1999 book Artificial Neural Networks. He took a BSc at Andhra University in 1961 and a PhD at the Indian Institute of Science in 1974. From 1977 to 2006 he held posts at Carnegie Mellon University and IIT Madras, where he headed the CSE department from 1985 to 1989. In 2014 the International Speech Communication Association named him an ISCA Fellow for outstanding contributions to research and education in processing of speech. He is Emeritus Professor and INSA Honorary Scientist at IIIT Hyderabad.

  1. 1961–1974

    Degrees from Andhra and IISc

    At Andhra University he takes a BSc in 1961, and at the Indian Institute of Science he earns a PhD in 1974.

  2. 1977–2006

    Carnegie Mellon, then IIT Madras

    In Pittsburgh he serves as a visiting associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University from 1977 to 1980. In 1980 he joins IIT Madras as a professor, and he heads its CSE department from 1985 to 1989.

  3. 1999

    The Artificial Neural Networks book

    Prentice-Hall of India publishes his book Artificial Neural Networks in 1999.

  4. 2004

    An Indian Academy of Sciences fellowship

    The Indian Academy of Sciences elects him a fellow in 2004 under its Engineering and Technology section.

  5. 2006–2012

    Microsoft Chair at IIIT Hyderabad

    He joins IIIT Hyderabad as professor and Microsoft Chair in 2006, a role he holds until 2012.

  6. 2014

    An ISCA fellowship

    The International Speech Communication Association names him an ISCA Fellow in 2014 for outstanding contributions to research and education in processing of speech.

  7. 2018

    General chair of INTERSPEECH 2018

    In September 2018 he serves as general chair of INTERSPEECH 2018 in Hyderabad, India.

  8. Since 2025

    Emeritus professor at IIIT Hyderabad

    He is Emeritus Professor and INSA Honorary Scientist at IIIT Hyderabad.
