Anind K. Dey
Also known as A Dey, A. K. Dey, A.K. Dey, Anind Dey
Anind Dey is a computer scientist whose research spans artificial intelligence, machine learning, human-computer interaction and context-aware computing. He earned degrees in computer engineering, aerospace engineering and computer science, developed the Context Toolkit, and held research and faculty roles at Intel, the University of California, Berkeley, and Carnegie Mellon. At Carnegie Mellon, he directed the Human-Computer Interaction Institute and received an NSF CAREER Award; the ACM SIGCHI Academy inducted him in 2015. In 2021, he became an ACM Fellow and his coauthored self-reflection paper received a UbiComp 10-Year Impact Award. He is Dean and Professor of the University of Washington Information School, which he has led since 2018.

Timeline
-
1993–2000
Degrees and the Context Toolkit
At Simon Fraser University, he earns a bachelor's degree in computer engineering in 1993. Georgia Tech's School of Aerospace Engineering awards him an MS in aerospace engineering in 1995, and its College of Computing awards him an MS and PhD in computer science in 2000. His Context Toolkit supports the development and deployment of context-aware applications, and its first public release appears in 2000.
-
2001–2005
Intel and Berkeley roles
He works as a senior researcher at Intel Research Berkeley from 2001 to 2004 and as an adjunct assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science at UC Berkeley from 2002 to 2005. He joins Carnegie Mellon's Human-Computer Interaction Institute faculty in 2005.
-
2008
An NSF CAREER Award
In 2008, he receives the National Science Foundation's Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award.
-
2014
Director of CMU's HCII
Carnegie Mellon appoints him Charles M. Geschke Director of the Human-Computer Interaction Institute in 2014. His HCII research uses sensors and mobile technology to model human behavior, including dwellSense, which monitors older adults' daily activities for signs of physical or cognitive decline.
-
2015
The ACM SIGCHI Academy
The ACM SIGCHI Academy inducts him in 2015 for his contributions to human-computer interaction.
-
2018
Dean at the UW iSchool
He becomes Dean of the University of Washington Information School in 2018.
-
2021
ACM Fellow and UbiComp Impact Award
He becomes an ACM Fellow in 2021. In 2021, the UbiComp 10-Year Impact Award recognizes his coauthored paper with Ian Li and Jodi Forlizzi, “Understanding My Data, Myself: Supporting Self-reflection with Ubicomp Technologies.”
-
As of October 2026
Dean and professor at UW
As of October 2026, he is Dean and Professor of the University of Washington Information School, with adjunct appointments in the Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Human-Centered Design and Engineering. His specialization is artificial intelligence and machine learning, and his research areas include human-computer interaction.
