Anh Tuan Luu
Also known as Luu Anh Tuan
Anh Tuan Luu is an AI researcher at Nanyang Technological University whose work spans natural language processing, neural-network design and large language models. He earned an MSc in computer science from the National University of Singapore in 2011 and a PhD in computer science from NTU in 2017. At A*STAR and MIT CSAIL, he held research scientist and postdoctoral roles. His published work includes long-document question generation, a hypercomplex neural-layer paper that won an ICLR 2021 Outstanding Paper Award, and research on language-model backdoor attacks. NTU promoted him to Associate Professor with tenure in September 2025; he is an Associate Professor there as of October 2026.

Timeline
-
2011–2017
Degrees at NUS and NTU
He earns an MSc in computer science from the National University of Singapore in 2011 and a PhD in computer science from Nanyang Technological University in 2017.
-
2016–2018
Research scientist at A*STAR
From 2016 to 2018, he is a research scientist at A*STAR's Institute for Infocomm Research in Singapore.
-
2018–2020
MIT postdoc and question generation
From 2018 to 2020, he is a postdoctoral fellow at MIT CSAIL in the Natural Language Processing group under Regina Barzilay. In 2020, he coauthors Capturing Greater Context for Question Generation with Darsh Shah and Barzilay; its multi-stage attention model connects target answers with context across long documents and outperforms earlier methods on SQuAD, MS MARCO and NewsQA.
-
2020–2025
Conference area chairs
His conference service includes Senior Area Chair for EMNLP in 2020 and Area Chair roles for ACL from 2021 to 2025, ICLR from 2022 to 2025, NeurIPS and NAACL from 2023 to 2025, and ICML in 2025.
-
2021
A hypercomplex ICLR paper
In 2021, he coauthors Beyond Fully-Connected Layers with Quaternions, which lets models learn hypercomplex multiplication rules for arbitrary dimensions with 1/n as many learnable parameters as a fully connected layer. The paper wins an ICLR Outstanding Paper Award.
-
August 2025
Backdoor attacks on language models
In August 2025, he leads a clean-label backdoor attack that uses normal-looking text prompts to induce language models to give wrong answers and is harder to detect. The paper appears in Expert Systems with Applications in 2025.
-
September 2025
Promotion with tenure
In September 2025, NTU promotes him to Associate Professor with tenure at its College of Computing and Data Science.
-
As of October 2026
Associate professor at NTU
As of October 2026, he is an Associate Professor at NTU's College of Computing and Data Science, where his research covers large language models, graph neural networks and trustworthy AI.
