David J. Fleet

Also known as D. Fleet, D. J. Fleet, D.J. Fleet, David Fleet

David Fleet is a computer vision researcher whose work spans human tracking, molecular imaging, text-to-image models and therapeutic language models. He enrolled at Queen’s to study music, then turned toward computer science through conversations about cognitive science and AI; he earned degrees at Queen’s and Toronto and worked at PARC before joining the University of Toronto. He joined Vector faculty in 2017 and served as its Associate Research Director from 2018 to 2019. His human-tracking paper received the 2010 Koenderink Prize, and his 2022 Imagen paper received a NeurIPS Outstanding Paper award. He coauthored TxGemma in 2025 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2026; as of October 2026, he leads Google DeepMind’s Toronto team as a UTSC professor, CIFAR AI Chair and Vector faculty member.

Timeline

  1. 1979–2003

    From music toward AI

He enrolled at Queen’s in 1979 to study music, then turned to computer science and mathematics after conversations about cognitive science and AI. He earned a BSc at Queen’s and MSc and PhD degrees at Toronto, taught at Queen’s, spent four years at PARC, and joined the University of Toronto in October 2003.

  2. 2010

    Tracking human figures

He received the Koenderink Prize for the paper “Stochastic Tracking of 3D Human Figures Using 2D Image Motion,” coauthored with H. Sidenbladh and M. J. Black.

  3. Since 2017

    Vector research leadership

He joined the Vector Institute faculty in 2017 and served as Associate Research Director from 2018 to 2019.

  4. 2020

    Building cryoSPARC

He initiated the research behind cryoSPARC and joined Structura Biotechnology as an expert advisor.

  5. 2022

    Pairing language and images

He coauthored Imagen’s text-to-image diffusion paper, “Photorealistic Text-to-Image Diffusion Models with Deep Language Understanding.” NeurIPS gave the paper an Outstanding Paper award.

  6. 2025

    AI for therapeutic science

He coauthored TxGemma, a suite of large language models for therapeutic-property prediction and interactive reasoning.

  7. 2026

    Elected to the Royal Society

He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada for contributions spanning computer vision, generative AI and cryo-electron microscopy.

  8. As of October 2026

    Leading a Toronto AI team

He is CIFAR AI Chair and Professor of Computer Science at the University of Toronto Scarborough, a Vector Institute faculty member, and the leader of Google DeepMind’s Toronto team.
