Researcher

Andy Lo

Andy Lo is an AI researcher whose work spans ontology learning, reasoning, language models, and speech systems. He was part of a Cambridge bird-counting project in March 2022 and coauthored OLLM in 2024, an LLM method for building ontology hierarchies. His Mistral papers from 2025 through 2026 covered reasoning models, multimodal audio, coding agents, compact language models, and speech generation. As of October 2026, he is an AI scientist at Mistral AI.

Timeline

  1. March 2022

    Counting migrating shearwaters

In March 2022, he is part of a University of Cambridge team tasked with building a simulation tool to count Yelkouan shearwaters during migration.

  2. 2024

    Building ontology hierarchies

In 2024, he coauthors OLLM, a method for building the taxonomic backbone of an ontology with a fine-tuned LLM. The paper appears in the NeurIPS 2024 main conference track.

  3. June 2025

    Mistral's first reasoning model

In June 2025, he coauthors the paper that introduces Magistral, Mistral's first reasoning model and a scalable reinforcement learning pipeline.

  4. July–August 2025

    Voxtral and Devstral

In July 2025, he coauthors Voxtral, a pair of multimodal audio chat models for understanding spoken audio and text. In August 2025, he coauthors Devstral, a lightweight open-source model for coding agents.

  5. January 2026

    Ministral 3

In January 2026, he coauthors the Ministral 3 series, a family of parameter-efficient dense language models for applications with limited compute and memory.

  6. February–March 2026

    Voxtral Realtime and TTS

In February 2026, he coauthors Voxtral Realtime, a streaming speech recognition model that matches offline transcription quality at sub-second latency. In March 2026, he coauthors Voxtral TTS, a multilingual model that generates speech from as little as three seconds of reference audio.

  7. As of October 2026

    AI scientist at Mistral
