Researcher

Andrew Owens

Andrew Owens is a computer scientist whose research connects vision, sound, and touch through machine perception. He earned a computer science B.A. at Cornell in 2010 and a Ph.D. at MIT in 2016. His papers include a 2015 study that predicts sounds from silent video, a 2017 study that uses ambient audio to train visual models, and a 2023 paper on camera metadata for image forensics. He held a UC Berkeley postdoctoral role, spent five years as an assistant professor at Michigan, received an NSF CAREER Award in 2024, and became a Sloan Research Fellow in 2025. As of October 2026, he is an associate professor of computer science at Cornell Tech, where his work includes soundtracks for silent videos, robotic manipulation with vision and touch, and AI-generated image detection.

Timeline

  1. 2010–2016

Computer science at Cornell and MIT

He earns a B.A. in computer science at Cornell in 2010 and a Ph.D. in computer science at MIT in 2016.

  2. 2015–2017

    Sound prediction and visual learning

In 2015, he coauthors Visually Indicated Sounds, which predicts an object's sound when struck to study physical interactions in a visual scene. His 2017 paper Learning Sight from Sound uses ambient audio as supervision for visual models that learn about objects and scenes.

  3. 2016–2019

    Postdoctoral research at Berkeley

From 2016 to 2019, he works as a postdoctoral scholar at UC Berkeley.

  4. 2020–2025

    Assistant professor at Michigan

He teaches Michigan's computer vision course in fall 2020 and fall 2024 during five years as an assistant professor in its EECS department, before joining Cornell Tech in 2025.

  5. 2023

    EXIF as Language

In 2023, he coauthors EXIF as Language, which links image patches with camera metadata and learns features for image-forensics and calibration tasks.

  6. 2024

    An NSF CAREER Award

He receives an NSF CAREER Award in 2024.

  7. 2025

    A Sloan Research Fellowship

He is named a Sloan Research Fellow in 2025. His research builds machine perception systems using multisensory data and spans computer vision, robotics, and digital media integrity.

  8. As of October 2026

    Associate professor at Cornell Tech

As of October 2026, he is an associate professor of computer science at Cornell Tech. His research creates multimodal systems that learn to see, hear, and touch, with applications in silent-video soundtracks, robotic manipulation with vision and touch, and detecting AI-generated images.
