Researcher

Constantinos Daskalakis

Also known as Costis

Constantinos Daskalakis is a computer scientist whose research connects game theory and economic markets with machine learning. He studied electrical and computer engineering in Athens, earned a Berkeley PhD on Nash equilibria, and joined MIT after a Microsoft Research postdoc. His work includes computational methods for multi-item auctions, and he received the 2018 Rolf Nevanlinna Prize. He co-authored an ICML 2026 Outstanding Paper on diffusion-model sampling. As of October 2026, he is an Avanessians Professor at MIT and a member of ARCHIMEDES’ Leadership Team.

Timeline

  1. 1999–2004

    Engineering in Athens

He earns a diploma in electrical and computer engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 2004.

  2. 2004–2008

    A PhD on Nash equilibria

At UC Berkeley, he completes a computer science PhD in 2008 with a dissertation on Nash equilibria. The work shows that computing a Nash equilibrium for a three-player game is computationally intractable, and it receives the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award.

  3. 2008–2009

    From Microsoft to MIT

He works as a postdoctoral researcher at Microsoft Research New England in 2008–2009 and joins the MIT faculty in 2009.

  4. 2012

    Multi-item auctions

With Yang Cai and Matt Weinberg, he publishes the FOCS 2012 paper “Optimal Multi-Dimensional Mechanism Design: Reducing Revenue to Welfare Maximization.” The work addresses a decades-old economics problem in designing auctions for multiple items.

  5. 2018

    A Nevanlinna Prize

He receives the 2018 Rolf Nevanlinna Prize.

  6. 2026

    Sampling diffusion models

With Fan Chen, Sinho Chewi and Alexander Rakhlin, he co-authors “High-accuracy sampling for diffusion models and log-concave distributions,” which receives an ICML 2026 Outstanding Paper Award.

  7. As of October 2026

    MIT and Archimedes

As of October 2026, he is the Avanessians Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT and a member of ARCHIMEDES’ Leadership Team.
