Andrew H. Beck
Also known as Andrew Beck, Andy Beck, A H Beck, A. Beck, A. H. Beck, A.H. BECK, A.H. Beck
Andrew Beck is a biomedical-informatics researcher whose work applies machine learning to cancer pathology. He earned an MD from Brown, completed anatomic pathology residency and molecular genetic pathology fellowship at Stanford, and earned a Stanford PhD in biomedical informatics. At Stanford, he first-authored C-Path research that used tissue images to predict breast-cancer survival; in 2016, his deep-learning team won both tasks in an ISBI challenge and reduced human error when pathologists used its predictions. He co-founded PathAI in 2016, and the company later partnered with GSK, launched AISight, and received FDA clearance for AISight Dx primary diagnosis. As of October 2026, he is PathAI’s CEO and co-founder and Global Head of Digital Pathology at Roche.
Timeline
-
2006–2013
Brown and Stanford training
In 2006, he earns an MD from Brown’s Warren Alpert Medical School. He completes residency and fellowship training in anatomic pathology and molecular genetic pathology at Stanford, and earns a PhD in biomedical informatics there in 2013.
-
2011
C-Path and cancer survival
In November 2011, he is a doctoral candidate in biomedical informatics at Stanford and first author of a study introducing C-Path, a machine-learning method that analyzes breast-cancer images to predict survival. C-Path measures 6,642 cellular factors and outperforms human-based evaluation.
-
2016
A deep-learning challenge win
In 2016, he coauthors a deep-learning system for detecting metastatic breast cancer in whole-slide images of sentinel lymph-node biopsies. The team wins both tasks in an ISBI grand challenge, with a whole-slide classification AUC of 0.925. Combining its predictions with a pathologist’s diagnosis raises AUC to 0.995 and reduces human error by about 85 percent.
-
2016
Co-founding PathAI
PathAI is founded in 2016 with Beck as a co-founder. The company applies technology to pathology to reduce diagnostic error and improve accuracy and reproducibility.
-
April 2022
A GSK research partnership
In April 2022, he describes a multi-year PathAI–GSK partnership that combines the companies’ AI and platform engineering teams to scale algorithm development and integrate new insights into clinical trials. The partners aim to use machine learning to predict which patients may benefit from therapies.
-
August 2023
AISight image management
In August 2023, he introduces AISight, a digital pathology image-management system for anatomic pathology laboratories. The platform builds on PathAI’s algorithm-development and machine-learning work.
-
July 2025
FDA clearance for AISight Dx
In July 2025, he speaks as PathAI’s co-founder and CEO after AISight Dx receives FDA clearance for primary diagnosis in clinical settings. The clearance supports use with the Hamamatsu NanoZoomer S360MD and Leica Aperio GT 450 Dx scanners.
-
As of October 2026
Digital pathology at Roche
He serves as Global Head of Digital Pathology at Roche and CEO and co-founder at PathAI.
