Andrew Gordon Wilson
Also known as Andrew Wilson
Andrew Gordon Wilson is a machine-learning researcher whose work spans Gaussian processes, Bayesian methods, and deep learning. He earned a PhD in machine learning at the University of Cambridge and a BSc in mathematics and physics at the University of British Columbia, then led a machine-learning group at Cornell. His research includes KISS-GP, Deep Kernel Learning, and GPyTorch, a PyTorch platform for scalable Gaussian-process inference. A paper on Bayesian model selection that he coauthored won ICML's 2022 Outstanding Paper Award, and AISTATS gave his Deep Kernel Learning paper a Test of Time Honorable Mention in 2026. As of October 2026, he is a Professor at NYU and an Amazon Scholar working on time-series forecasting foundation models.

2017
A Cornell machine-learning group
At Cornell, he leads a machine-learning group and advises students in ORIE, Computer Science, Statistics, and CAM. In 2017, he organizes the NIPS symposium on Interpretable Machine Learning.
-
2018
Building GPyTorch
In 2018, he coauthors the GPyTorch paper, which presents a PyTorch platform for scalable Gaussian-process inference using blackbox matrix-matrix multiplication.
-
2022
An ICML Outstanding Paper Award
In 2022, he shares ICML's Outstanding Paper Award for Bayesian Model Selection, the Marginal Likelihood, and Generalization with Sanae Lotfi, Pavel Izmailov, Gregory Benton, and Micah Goldblum.
-
2025
A position paper on deep learning
In 2025, he publishes an ICML position paper examining benign overfitting, double descent, and overparameterization as generalization phenomena across model classes.
-
2026
A Test of Time mention
In 2026, AISTATS gives his 2016 paper Deep Kernel Learning a Test of Time Honorable Mention for its connection between deep learning and Gaussian processes.
