Andrew G. White

Also known as A G White, A G. White, A. G White, A. G. White, A. White, Andrew White

Andrew White is a physicist at the University of Queensland whose research includes quantum optics, experimental quantum computing, and energy-efficient AI. He studied chemistry, mathematics and physics at UQ, earned a doctorate in physical sciences at the Australian National University, and moved to Los Alamos before establishing UQ's Quantum Technology Laboratory in 1999. His work includes photon-based quantum logic and a quantum-chemistry algorithm; he received the Pawsey Medal in 2010 and became a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 2013. He received a 2021 Australian Laureate Fellowship for quantum-enabled AI. As of October 2026, he is a professor at UQ and directs the Quantum Technology Lab and National Advanced Photonics Facility.

Timeline

  1. 1989–1997

    UQ degrees and a doctorate

He earns a BSc in chemistry, mathematics and physics at UQ in 1989, a physics honours degree in 1990, and a PhD in physical sciences at ANU in 1997.

  2. 1999

    The Quantum Technology Laboratory

After completing his quantum-physics doctorate and moving to Los Alamos National Labs, he establishes the Quantum Technology Laboratory at UQ in 1999.

  3. 2004

    A qudit research award

In 2004, he wins a UQ Foundation Research Excellence Award for a project on qudits. He plans to encode these multi-level quantum systems in optical patterns and manipulate them with holographic techniques.

  4. 2010

    A photon quantum-logic gate

In 2010, he receives the Pawsey Medal for physics. His work includes the first unambiguous experimental demonstration of an entangling quantum-logic gate with photons in 2003.

  5. 2013

    An Academy fellowship

In 2013, he is elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. His experiments include the first three-qubit Toffoli gate and a quantum-chemistry algorithm for calculating the ground and excited-state energies of molecular hydrogen.

  6. 2021

    Energy-efficient quantum AI

In 2021, he receives an Australian Laureate Fellowship for energy-efficient AI using quantum technologies. His 2022–2026 project aims to develop low-energy AI platforms and neuromorphic computers.

  7. 2024

    National Advanced Photonics Facility

In 2024, he leads UQ's National Advanced Photonics Facility in a $29 million package for 10 quantum projects.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor and facility director

He is a professor of physics at UQ, director of the Quantum Technology Lab and National Advanced Photonics Facility, and Node Leader of the Australian Research Council Training Centre in Current and Emergent Quantum Technologies.
