Greg Benton

Also known as Gregory Benton, Gregory W. Benton

Greg Benton is a machine-learning researcher whose work spans Gaussian processes, neural-network invariances, Bayesian model selection, and applied AI. At NYU, he completed a computer science PhD and developed methods for kernel learning, fast ensembling, and model comparison. His coauthored Bayesian model-selection paper received ICML's Outstanding Paper Award in 2022, and he led applied language-model work at Celonis through July 2025. Since July 2025, he is a Senior Applied Scientist at Dandy, where he works on multimodal generative models for bespoke prosthetic design.

Timeline

  1. 2019–2023

    A PhD at NYU

By 2023, he completes a computer science PhD at NYU and earns bachelor's and master's degrees in applied mathematics at the University of Colorado.

  2. 2019–2021

    Kernel learning and fast ensembling

His NYU doctoral work under Andrew Gordon Wilson studies Gaussian processes and neural-network structure. In 2019, he coauthors Function-Space Distributions over Kernels, introducing functional kernel learning. His other papers include Learning Invariances in Neural Networks from Training Data in 2020 and Loss Surface Simplexes for Mode Connecting Volumes and Fast Ensembling in 2021.

  3. 2020

    Podcast recommendations at Spotify

At Spotify in 2020, he works as a research intern and develops podcast recommendations from sequential listening patterns.

  4. 2021

    Forecasting at J.P. Morgan

At J.P. Morgan in 2021, he works as a quantitative research summer associate on stochastic differential equations and options-pricing methods.

  5. 2022

    Threat detection at Microsoft Research

At Microsoft Research in 2022, he researches neural and graph-based methods for fileless-attack detection, including a weakly supervised model trained on billions of shell commands.

  6. 2022

    An ICML Outstanding Paper

In 2022, his coauthored Bayesian Model Selection, the Marginal Likelihood, and Generalization receives ICML's Outstanding Paper Award. It finds that marginal likelihood can be negatively correlated with generalization and proposes conditional marginal likelihood as a partial remedy. He also coauthors a 2022 Gaussian-process forecasting paper that introduces Volt and Magpie for stock and wind-speed forecasting.

  7. February 2023–July 2025

    Language models at Celonis

From February 2023 to July 2025, he works as a Senior Applied Scientist at Celonis, developing custom process-event tokenization and fine-tuning LLMs for event prediction. He leads a roughly five-person team taking enterprise LLM and agent applications into production.

  8. Since July 2025

    Generative models at Dandy

Since July 2025, he is a Senior Applied Scientist at Dandy, where he works on multimodal generative models for bespoke prosthetic design. These models feed into manufacturing lines with little human intervention.
