Alfonso Emilio Gerevini

Alfonso Emilio Gerevini is an AI researcher whose work spans automated planning, knowledge representation and reasoning, and machine learning. He began as a research scientist at IRST in 1989 and joined the University of Brescia in 1995. His groups developed LPG, PbP, and PbP2 planners that won international competition awards, and he coauthored PDDL3 research on plan constraints and goals. He became a EurAI Fellow in 2019 and coauthored a 2024 method that compiles numeric and metric time constraints into planning problems. Since May 2026, he leads the University of Brescia's VeriPlan project and is a full professor of Information Processing Systems.

Timeline

  1. 1989–1995

    Research at IRST

From 1989 to 1995, he works as a research scientist at IRST in Trento. He joins the University of Brescia in 1995. His AI research spans automated planning, knowledge representation and reasoning, and machine learning.

  2. 2002–2004

    The LPG planner

In 2002, his group develops LPG, an automated planner that wins IPC-3's best fully automated planner award. An extended version wins an award at IPC-4 in 2004.

  3. 2006–2009

    PDDL3 and IPC-5

For IPC-5 in 2006, he and four coauthors develop the PDDL3 language and its benchmark domains. Their 2009 study explains how PDDL3 expresses strong and soft constraints on plan structure and goals.

  4. 2008–2011

    PbP and PbP2

In 2008, his group develops PbP, which wins the learning track of IPC-6. The revised PbP2 planner wins IPC-7's learning track in 2011.

  5. 2019

    A EurAI Fellowship

He becomes a EurAI Fellow in 2019.

  6. 2024

    Compiling planning constraints

In 2024, he coauthors a method that compiles PDDL3 constraints with numeric conditions and metric time into a numeric planning problem. The optimized method reduces task size and outperforms existing planners on benchmark domains.

  7. Since May 2026

    Leading VeriPlan

Since May 2026, he leads VeriPlan, a University of Brescia project scheduled to run through May 2027. The project aims to provide an open-source framework for secure, high-quality multi-agent systems. He is a full professor of Information Processing Systems at Brescia and serves as a conference chair for ICAPS 2026, held in Dublin.
