Alex Gunning

Also known as Ali Gunning

Alex Gunning is an Oxford DPhil student in quantum physics whose work includes AI evaluation. He co-authored a study of Feynman's clock model for quantum computing and a paper introducing FrontierMath, a benchmark for advanced mathematical reasoning in AI. Later papers examined how interaction geometry shapes critical behavior and low-energy phases in sparse, long-range quantum systems. He earned a bachelor's degree at University College Dublin and an MSc in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics at Oxford. As of October 2026, he studies many-body quantum physics in Oxford's Theory of Quantum Systems group.

Timeline

  1. September 2023

    Feynman's quantum computer

In September 2023, he co-authors a study of Feynman's clock model, which finds runtime scales with the number of gates to the five-thirds power.

  2. November 2024

    FrontierMath and AI reasoning

In November 2024, he co-authors FrontierMath, a benchmark of hundreds of original mathematics problems crafted and vetted by expert mathematicians to evaluate advanced mathematical reasoning in AI.

  3. December 2025

    Geometry shapes spin phases

Three collaborators join him on a December 2025 study of sparse long-range spin models; it shows how tunable interaction geometry shapes critical behavior and phase boundaries.

  4. June 2026

    Sparse quantum lattice phases

In June 2026, he and five collaborators study low-energy phases in sparse tunable long-range quantum models, showing how graph symmetry and frustration shape phase transitions.

  5. As of October 2026

    DPhil at Oxford

As of October 2026, he is a DPhil student in Oxford's Theory of Quantum Systems group and studies many-body quantum physics, with a focus on sparse long-range interacting systems. His education includes a bachelor's degree at University College Dublin and an MSc in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics at Oxford.
