Aditya Kalyanpur

Also known as A. Kalyanpur, Aditya A. Kalyanpur, Aditya Kalyanpur A, Aditya Anand Kalyanpur, Adi Kalyanpur

Aditya Kalyanpur is an AI researcher whose work spans ontology reasoning, language understanding, and question answering. He completed a computer-science PhD at Maryland, coauthored SHER, and helped lead IBM's DeepQA question-answering work behind Watson. As a member of IBM's Watson team, he shared the 2013 Feigenbaum Prize; at Elemental Cognition, he later coauthored GLUCOSE, Braid, and Cora. As of October 2026, he is a principal applied scientist at Amazon, and his 2026 paper introduced agentic evaluation for deep research.

Timeline

  1. 2006

    A dissertation on OWL repair

He completes a computer-science PhD at Maryland. In 2006, his dissertation, Debugging and Repair of OWL Ontologies, presents methods to diagnose and repair semantic defects in OWL-DL.

  2. 2009

    Scaling ontology reasoning

He coauthors SHER, a reasoner for querying large relational datasets with OWL ontologies. Its 2009 experiments report conjunctive query answering over up to 7 million triples in seconds and datasets of 60 million triples in minutes.

  3. 2010–2012

    Leading IBM's Watson work

He serves as one of the technical leads on IBM's Watson question-answering system. His 2010 DeepQA overview and 2012 paper explain Watson's question answering and use of structured data and ontologies for candidate answers and evidence.

  4. 2013

    A Feigenbaum Prize for Watson

As an IBM Watson team member, he shares the 2013 Feigenbaum Prize for demonstrating that combined AI methods can achieve human-level performance in real-time factual question answering.

  5. 2020–2022

    GLUCOSE and Braid

His 2020 GLUCOSE paper introduces a dataset of story-grounded commonsense causal knowledge. In 2022, he coauthors Braid at Elemental Cognition, a neuro-symbolic reasoner that supports probabilistic rules and builds logical explanations.

  6. 2024–2025

    Cora for scientific question answering

In 2024, he describes Elemental Cognition's neuro-symbolic platform and Cora, a collaborative research assistant for complex research tasks. His 2025 paper combines multi-round retrieval-augmented generation with a causal model and Cogent, then evaluates it in life sciences.

  7. As of October 2026

    Principal applied scientist at Amazon

As of October 2026, he is a principal applied scientist at Amazon. In 2026, he coauthors DREAM, an agentic evaluation framework that tests deep-research reports for factual correctness, temporal validity, grounded coverage, and reasoning.
