Adam Lerer
Also known as Adam K. Lerer
Adam Lerer is an AI engineer whose work spans molecular dynamics computing, deep-learning tools, game-playing agents, and protein design. At MIT, he earns degrees in computer science and physics and develops software for Anton supercomputers. He later joins Facebook AI Research, where he co-leads the Diplomacy team behind CICERO and builds agents for poker, Hanabi, and no-press Diplomacy. He develops PyTorch-Big-Graph as a member of the original PyTorch developer team; his papers on protein inverse folding and no-press Diplomacy receive awards at ICML 2022 and ICLR 2023. As of October 2026, he is a Member of Technical Staff at OpenAI.
Timeline
-
Before 2015
From MIT to Anton
At MIT, he earns a B.S. in computer science and physics and an M.Eng. in computer science. Before Facebook AI Research, he develops software and algorithms for Anton at D. E. Shaw Research, a special-purpose supercomputer for molecular dynamics.
-
2015–2023
Building Diplomacy agents
At Facebook AI Research, he works as a research engineer and co-leads the FAIR Diplomacy team behind CICERO, a human-level AI for Diplomacy. The team develops agents for poker, Hanabi, and no-press Diplomacy. He develops PyTorch-Big-Graph, an open-source package for large-scale multi-relation graph embeddings, and joins the original PyTorch developer team.
-
2022
Learning protein sequences
He coauthors a paper that predicts protein sequences from backbone coordinates and expands training data with 12 million AlphaFold2-predicted structures. The paper receives ICML 2022 Outstanding Paper Runner Up.
-
2023
Planning for human play
With Anton Bakhtin and colleagues, he coauthors a paper on human-regularized reinforcement learning and planning for no-press Diplomacy. The paper receives ICLR 2023 Honorable Mention.
-
As of October 2026
Joining OpenAI
He is a Member of Technical Staff at OpenAI.
