Researcher

Yuan Yu

Yuan Yu works on distributed systems for large-scale data processing and machine learning. He earned a PhD in mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin in 1992 and later led the creation of DryadLINQ at Microsoft Research. At Google Brain, he coauthored the TensorFlow paper and a 2018 paper on distributed dynamic control flow; in 2024 he coauthored a Microsoft post about Azure Maia 100. As of October 2026, he is a Technical Fellow at Microsoft Azure, focused on distributed systems and big-data processing.

Timeline

  1. 1992

    Mathematics PhD at UT Austin

He earns a PhD in mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin in 1992. His dissertation is titled Automated proofs of object code for a widely used microprocessor.

  2. 2007

    The Dryad paper

In March 2007, he coauthors the Dryad paper with Mihai Budiu, Michael Isard, Andrew Birrell and Dennis Fetterly. Dryad breaks up programs and assigns them across clusters of servers or processors.

  3. 2008–2011

    DryadLINQ at Microsoft Research

In December 2008, he coauthors the DryadLINQ paper with Michael Isard, Dennis Fetterly, Mihai Budiu, Úlfar Erlingsson, Pradeep Kumar Gunda and Jon Currey. By 2011, he is a principal researcher at Microsoft Research Silicon Valley and leads the creation of DryadLINQ.

  4. 2016

    Google Brain and TensorFlow

Before joining Google, he works as a researcher at Microsoft Research and DEC/Compaq Systems Research Center. By 2016, he is a research scientist at Google Research on the Brain project. At Google Brain, he coauthors TensorFlow: A system for large-scale machine learning.

  5. 2018

    Dynamic control flow in TensorFlow

In 2018, he coauthors Dynamic Control Flow in Large-Scale Machine Learning, a TensorFlow paper for distributed dynamic control flow. It runs conditional branches and loops across many machines and supports automatic differentiation for machine-learning models.

  6. April 2024

    Azure Maia 100

In April 2024, he coauthors a Microsoft post about Azure Maia 100, Microsoft's first in-house AI accelerator, built to run cloud-based AI workloads and optimized for Azure AI infrastructure.

  7. As of October 2026

    Technical Fellow at Microsoft Azure

He is a Technical Fellow at Microsoft Azure, where he focuses on distributed systems and big-data processing.
