Yuan Yan Tang
Also known as Yuan Y. Tang, Tang Yuanyan, 唐遠炎
Yuan Yan Tang built a research career on wavelet methods for pattern recognition and document analysis. He earned a B.S. in electrical and electronic engineering at Chongqing University in 1966, an M.S. in electrical and electronic engineering at the Beijing Institute of Posts and Telecommunications in 1981, and a Ph.D. in computer science at Concordia University in 1990. In 1982 a Ph.D. scholarship took him to Concordia University in Canada, and in 2004 the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the International Association for Pattern Recognition elected him a Fellow for contributions to wavelet analysis, pattern recognition and document analysis. In 2011 he joined the University of Macau as chair professor in the Faculty of Science and Technology, and in 2012 World Scientific published Document Analysis and Recognition by Wavelet and Fractal Theories. As of October 2026, he is chair professor emeritus at the University of Macau and at Hong Kong Baptist University, and he directs the Smart City Research Center at the Zhuhai UM Science and Technology Research Institute.
