Researcher

Yasuaki Nakano

Yasuaki Nakano was a Japanese researcher in character recognition and document analysis, the work that teaches computers to read handwriting and printed forms. Born in Tokyo in 1938, he earned a Ph.D. in mathematical engineering at the University of Tokyo in 1975 and worked at Hitachi's Central Research Laboratory from 1963 to 1989, where he built handwritten character recognition for Hitachi's OCR. As a professor at Shinshu University from 1989, he explored neural networks for character and face recognition, chaired the programs of ICDAR 1993 and ICDAR 1997, and was General Chair of the DAS 1998 workshop in Nagano. IAPR named him a Fellow in 2000, and he moved to Kyushu Sangyo University in 2003. He died in 2007, and the IAPR Nakano Award for best paper at the DAS workshop carries his name.

Timeline

  1. 1961–1975

    Engineering degrees at Tokyo

Born in Tokyo in 1938, he graduates from the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Engineering in 1961 and from its postgraduate school in 1963. A Ph.D. in mathematical engineering from the same university follows in 1975.

  2. 1963

    Joining Hitachi's research laboratory

In 1963, he joins the Central Research Laboratory of Hitachi, where he stays until 1989 and works on speech recognition and character recognition. His method for recognizing printed Kanji with peripheral distributions influences OCR research in Japan, especially on handwritten Kanji.

  3. 1977–1989

    Handwritten OCR at Hitachi

From 1977 to 1989, he develops handwritten character recognition for Hitachi's OCR, covering numerals, alphabets and katakana first and handwritten Kanji later. In 1984, his group exhibits a document understanding system that incorporates character recognition and handles table-form documents.

  4. 1989–2003

    Professor at Shinshu University

In 1989, he becomes a professor in the Faculty of Engineering at Shinshu University. His research in the 1990s covers neural networks, from a 1993 feature-extraction method for character patterns with H. Miyao to a 1998 Pattern Recognition paper with Y. Dai on recognizing low-resolution faces with a Hopfield memory model.

  5. 1993–1998

    Chairing ICDAR and DAS

He is Program Chair of ICDAR 1993 in Tsukuba, Publicity Co-Chair of ICDAR 1995 in Montreal and Program Chair of ICDAR 1997 in Ulm. DAS 1998 in Nagano has him as General Chair, and ICPR 1998 in Brisbane as Program Track Co-Chair.

  6. 2000

    Named an IAPR Fellow

IAPR names him a Fellow in 2000 for contributions to recognition of handwritten characters, document analysis and service to IAPR. IEICE in Japan also counts him as a Fellow.

  7. 2003–2007

    Professor at Kyushu Sangyo University

In 2003, he joins Kyushu Sangyo University as a professor in the Faculty of Information Science. The DAS 2008 workshop in Nara lists him as Honorary Chair.

  8. 2007–2008

    Death and the Nakano Award

He dies in Fukuoka in July 2007. The IAPR Nakano Award for best paper at the DAS workshop is established in his memory; at DAS 2008 in Nara, Georg Buscher and Andreas Dengel receive the first one.
