Hiromichi Fujisawa

Hiromichi Fujisawa is a researcher whose work connects AI with handwritten character recognition, document understanding and retrieval. He joined Hitachi's Central Research Laboratory in 1974 and became a visiting scientist at Carnegie Mellon University in 1981. He became an IAPR Fellow in 2000, an IEEE Fellow in 2002 for contributions to document understanding and retrieval, and an IAPR/ICDAR award recipient in 2007 for industrial document analysis. In 2008, he co-edited a machine-learning volume on document analysis and recognition, then served as general chair of ICDAR in 2011. He received Japan's Prime Minister's Award for Industrial Standardization in 2014; as of October 2026, he advises Waseda University's Perceptual Computing Laboratory.
